Free your ID - Free .name’s
February 14th, 2007 - Fred StutzmanI know lots of folks who follow this blog are interested in personal identity management. I wanted to point you to a new collaboration between the JanRain folks and GNR, the Global Name Registry. The new site, FreeYourID.com will allow you to have a .name domain with the backend powered by OpenID. The site is free for 90 days if you’d like to give it a try!
Scott Kveton and Will Norris have written some good reviews of the site, and I love Scott’s thread as you can see debugging and troubleshooting going on in realtime. Kudos to all involved!

Thank you for not registering

Fair points, Dmitry. I pointed to the link to let people who follow (and try out) identity solutions know. I know there are a good number who read ClaimID’s blog. Also, there is a free trial. But your DIY solution would also work

I suppose trying it out is fine, as long as you’re planning to never register yourlastname.name

Neat idea. Unfortunately it creates yet another openid (I thought this was *single* sign on?), and provides quite ugly frame forwarding. I e-mailed them to see if I could prematurely cancel my trial, so I could register my .name myself. Then I can delegate it to my existing openid, and get rid of the frame forwarding in the process.

Because I can (at least I think I can)

Am a bit confused. I wanted to comment using my ID but find myself logged in instead (without the comment I theoretically posted (sighs) Graham.

I tried this out, it seems fun. I like it. I may even pay for it once my time is up.

Graham - just click logout and you’ll be dropped from the OpenID mode. I agree it is a little confusing but I’m sure the plugin developers are working on that.
